New Release: Manchester's next pop star - it's cool by LUCY

Updated: Dec 14, 2019

Last Friday, LUCY released her fifth single of the year, it’s cool. Manchester-based Lucy Deakin has a catchy dance-pop sound that immediately draws comparisons to Dua Lipa’s earworm hits. it’s cool is a promising introduction to the direction her debut EP – set to be released in 2020 – will take us.

Straight away, you know that the song is a big middle finger to an ex. “You know I never wanted it to end” Lucy tells her former lover. The lyrics to it’s cool are the thoughts you want to vocalise when you’re bitter about your ex breaking up with you and moving on perhaps a little too quickly. “She won’t put up with you like I do” she sings. The chorus is incredibly catchy, with Lucy incessantly insisting “it’s cool” that her ex has already moved on from her.

The more I listen to it’s cool, especially as we get to the last chorus, my perspective shifts. In fact, as well as sounding like a message to an old flame the song almost becomes a pep talk to yourself. “Honestly, it’s cool”, Lucy repeats, as though she’s trying to convince herself of the fact as well as her ex – and we’ve all been there. The nonchalant mind set you try to put yourself into when you desperately want to forget about someone seems to be one Lucy has adopted in the track.

She’s not just telling her ex that she’ll find someone else, she’s telling herself. “Don’t you worry about me, 'cause I’ll find somebody new”. The track becomes a motivational, girl-power anthem; one that encapsulates both a bitter message for your ex and a positive, “you’ve got this, girl” kind of attitude for yourself.
